The Manhattan Fire Protection District is a thriving community within one of the fastest-growing counties in Illinois. MFPD is a dynamic and professional, department that provides an all-hazard response to a district of approximately 15,000 residents in a primary response area of 72 square miles. The Fire District is an ISO class 1 and responded to 1,675 incidents last year. Manhattan is a combination department anchored by 15 full-time members of IAFF local 4991. Staffing is set at eight personnel per day, with a minimum of 6 personnel per day at two fire stations.


The Manhattan and Peotone Fire Department are potentially consolidating into one Fire District. Consolidation would mean a district of 150 square miles protecting almost 25,000 residents with three fire stations responding to approximately 2,600 incidents annually. The consolidation would allow for the hiring of an additional 8 full-time firefighter-paramedics to provide consistent staffing.

• Salary: Starting Base Salary $65,000.00 / Five Year Salary with incentives - $83,500.00.

   Department Overview

The Manhattan Fire Protection District’s (MFPD) leadership is dedicated to providing a progressive fire department for the community through the personal and professional development of its staff. The MFPD operates with a full-time staff of 15 sworn Firefighter/Paramedics (FF/PM) and 17 part-time Firefighter/Paramedics (FF/PM), a Fire Chief, a Deputy Chief, Battalion Chief, and two full-time civilian employees, from two stations located at 100 South Park Road. and 28710 South Cedar Road.

The Manhattan Fire Protection District is an all-hazards ISO Class 1 fire department, responding to 1,200 calls to service annually to the residents of Manhattan and unincorporated Will County. MFPD is an active organization within MABAS Division 19 and offers opportunities to participate in specialty rescue teams: (CART, HazMat) and arson investigation.

   Job Description

A FF/PM or FF/EMT-B performs duties in the areas of emergency medical, fire suppression, hazardous material, specialized technical rescue responses, fire prevention, and public education activities. These duties are above average in physical and mental difficulty. The FF/PM, FF/EMT-Bs is expected to maintain themselves, and all equipment in an “at ready status” to respond. Responses will be at all hours of the day and night and in all types of weather. The FF/PM, FF/EMT-Bs position involves considerable public contact, preparation of thorough and complete written reports, reading comprehension, and public speaking. FF/PMs, FF/EMT-Bs are scheduled 24 hours on-duty followed by 48 hours off duty.

   Qualifications:

  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be certified Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter with the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshall
  • Be IDPH licensed EMT-B; Paramedic preferred, with ability to test into the Silver Cross EMS System
  • Have valid Illinois Class B non-CDL Driver's License
  • Not have felony convictions

   Requirements:

  • New hires will be required to meet all department training and education requirements
  • New hires will be responsible for patient care and completing all necessary patient care report forms
  • New hires will perform interior and exterior structural firefighting operations
  • New hires will be required to become familiar with district vehicles, operations, and Sliver Cross SMO’s and MFPD policy and procedures
  • New hires will work as part of the Districts Public Education Program
  • Other duties as assigned

   Benefits:

  • Firefighter/EMT-B Starting Pay: $14.43/hour with a salary increase to $16.97/hour after 6 months of employment
  • Firefighter/Paramedic Starting Pay: $15.86/hour with a salary increase to $18.67/hour after 6 months of employment
  • Preference points are available for part-time employees when testing for full-time employment
  • An incentive for years of experience
  • New Hires can work up to 204 hours in 27 days (This does not include department training time or call back time during major events)
  • Paid holidays (time and a half)

   The selection process will include:

  • Oral interview
  • Background check including references
  • Pre-employment medical evaluation including vision and other requirements in accordance to the most current National Fire Protection Association Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Districts (NFPA 1582)
