This year the Manhattan Fire Protection District (MFPD) will once again be participating in Keep the Wreath Red which is a statewide initiative to practice fire safety during the holidays. The wreath will be illuminated outside MFPD station 81 until January 2nd. In the event of a fire related to holiday decorations, firefighters will replace a red bulb with a white one on the wreath. The goal of this safety campaign is to keep all the bulbs RED.

Help the MFPD “Keep the Wreath Red” by following a few easy safety tips:

• Unplug holiday lights before leaving home or sleeping
• Do not overload extension cords
• Be careful with candles and open flames
• Use flame-retardant decorations
• Ensure lights are in good condition and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed
• Keep natural trees watered; do not rely on chemical sprays to make your tree flame resistant

Remember to check all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. For more information contact the MFPD at 815-478-3197, www.mfpd.org, or visit us on Facebook. For additional winter safety information go to www.NFPA.org.
