FILE OF LIFE
|
|
Every second
counts! An ambulance soars past
traffic, sirens screaming and
lights flashing, the emergency
medical technicians race to the
home of a senior citizen.
|

|
|
When
they arrive, the senior is unconscious and
they have few facts to go on. Does the
patient have any existing conditions? Is he
taking any medication? Does he have
allergies?
This frightening scenario is all too common
for senior citizens and the EMTs that treat
them. That's why the FILE OF LIFE, a
mini-medical history posted on the outside
of one's refrigerator and/or personally
carried in a wallet or purse, was developed.
The FILE OF LIFE card enables medics to
obtain a quick medical history when a
patient is unable to offer one. The card
also eliminates the risk of the patient,
who, in a frightened state, may forget to
mention something important.
The card, which is kept in a red plastic
pocket labeled "FILE OF LIFE", lists the
patient's name, emergency medical contacts,
insurance information, social security
numbers, health problems, medications,
dosages, allergies, recent surgeries,
religion, doctor's name and health care
proxy. The entire pocket is held, with a
magnet, to the outside of the refrigerator.
In addition to the FILE OF LIFE for the
refrigerator, a compact version is also
available for a person to carry in a wallet
or purse. A card containing the same medical
information is enclosed in a small plastic
case that is with the person at all times.
Great to take to all of your doctors
appointments. There is a door decal that can
be placed on or near your front door. This
alerts the EMTs, as soon as they arrive,
that you have the FILE OF LIFE card.
The FILE OF LIFE is not just for senior
citizens, it's for everyone. Even if your
are taking one or two medications, or if you
have any severe allergies to certain foods
or medications. Any type of information
about yourself will help the EMTs help you!
These FILE OF LIFE cards are FREE of charge
to Manhattan Fire Protection District
residents. If you live outside of our
district, you may request a FILE OF LIFE
packet for a small fee of $5.00 per packet.
Each packet contains 2 large cards and large
red pockets, 2 small cards and small red
pockets, and one sticker for front door. You
must contact your home fire department and
let them know you are using the FILE OF LIFE
program.
For more information, please contact the
Public Education Coordinator or download a
FILE OF LIFE request form.
